From your opening paragraph it appears you are not overly familiar with each OS, other than Windows.

You have left out that the Linux approach to security is distribution dependent, and nothing to do with 'Linux' as such. From Ubuntu's approach of not even letting you have a root account to Slackware not including PAM to Fedora having SELinux.

It should also have been pointed out just how much Windows has improved in the last 5 years.

Additionally these days with most exploits being browser based, the OS is less significant and relevant than it was a few years ago.

I think the iPad really look the biz, just not sure what biz that is. It is a sad fact that Steve Jobs compared it to both the Kindle and a netbook. Basically deriding the netbook as not a very good notebook with poor battery life, screen res, and weight issues, and the Kindle as being limited and not color. Well, yes, the Kindle does suffer from that, but adds in many days of use between charges, and never purported to be anything other than a book replacement. As for the netbook, it was never seen as a notebook replacement - it is a multitasking, flash enabled, internet and media consumption device. Yes you can use it instead of a REAL PC, but it's never going to replace one - and it is color, and it can be used as an ebook reader, and you can get them with up to 1366x768 res (better than iPad), and the N450 chipped ones run for 10 hrs. I love the way the iPad looks, but in comparing it to two very different offerings, Jobbs has just muddied the waters for his baby. I swapped my netbook for a 13" notebook as it wasn't powerful enough for everything I needed, and it did more than an iPad! A color Kindle... that I'd buy!

I'm extremely wary of scams and phishing attempts, but the way you describe it, it sounds like I did get caught in one. Recently a friend sent me a link to something to do with Facebook, and while I don't use Facebook very much, I was curious and tried clicking on it, but my log in didn't work. Now I realise it was no doubt a phishing expedition I didn't pick up on.

Which brings me to the next point. What can you do about it? I suppose I can change my password, (I suppose I'd better) but what else can be done/ Is it all a matter of shutting the gate after the horse has bolted?

Scary world...

After reading around, it seems that the eye strain thing may only affect particular people. Some users don't complain, others do. I think it has something to do with the differing brightness between the ambient and active lighting, the way the back light is generated (bulb or LED), and the frequency of moving your eyes between dark/bright frames on the LCD; or the LCD and a darker ambient environment.

I agree that the device may well be a great consumption device, but I'm still struggling to see how it'd cater for creation.

My aunt wants one, and I can understand why. She's already levelled up on the iPhone, she understands how to buy/use apps, and she loves the fantastically simple interface.

I would be tempted to get one to read on, or watch movies on. I disagree with your points about the screen sucking for reading, I do it off my iPhone already, an iPad would just offer a bigger screen to do it on.

There is already a large ecosystem of apps out for the iPad, so it's useful for a lot of stuff.

My reasons from buying one would mostly come down to it being a cheap Lemur replacement, but that's a very niche need.

I agree that it's "good enough", however there are some aspects which are truly saddening. MP3 may have distortion, but I generally don't have an issue with it. Sure, it's not the best quality, but for most people the difference is negligible. It's the dynamic compression that's irritating, particularly since it has ruined the lossless end of the market too. That, and because it doesn't have any positive attributes whatsoever. It's silly.

I think the reason is part 'election promise', part 'save the children' and a massive slice of 'censor anything we don't agree with'.

The whole thing should be dumped before more money is wasted, and Conroy realises that it won't work. From what I've been told, IPv6 will render the filter useless. If that's the case, then this whole project will fail before long.

Yeah, nice article. But I heard an interesting argument last year that looked at the other side of the coin - the term they used was "Good Enough Technology" and I think whoever was behind that made lots of valid points as well. I Googled it and found this Wired article : http://www.wired.com/gadgets/miscellaneous/magazine/17-09/ff_goodenough?currentPage=all

No, they achieved nothing and caused a great deal of PR damage. Their press release was immature, poorly worded and full of the wrong messages.

I think Conroy has his head in a place of great shadows, but this sort of behaviour will not help in any way. It needs to be ordinary people making a common sense argument against the draconian and useless policies proposed by the ALP (of all parties), not fring agendas about free porn. How trite and ridiculous.

What's your take on the why of all this proposed policy Vito? Simply playing to the moralists who want a magical 'safe' internet without any understanding of how impossible or desirable that would actually be? Another agenda entirely? I can't figure it at all. It's so obvious a filter won't work. My nine year old knows that. What's their game?

Ah, facebook. How I despise thee!

I had all my privacy settings locked down. You couldn't even see who my friends were without being a friend.

But no, you just had to have that "What information of mine can friends give away without asking?" thing.

Fuck you facebook.

Fuck you.
