TP-Link TL-PA201 Ethernet Over Power Kit Review
Conclusion
Judging from the test results, the EoP kit is a great alternative to a wireless connection. The throughput, reliability and consitantly low pings make it suitable for streaming HD video, connecting to the Internet, and transferring files over a network. At this point in time, it's not as cheap or fast as a direct Ethernet connection, but for those who don't have that option, and don't require gigabit speeds, this is an attractive product.
The TP-Link TL-PA201 is advertised as a 200mbps device. So why did the tests show a connection speed of almost 52Mbps? After searching through some whitepapers, the HomePlug AV specification of which the kit is based is designed to transfer data at 150Mbps. To quote the white paper:
"The Physical (PHY) Layer utilizes this 200 Mbps channel rate to provide a 150 Mbps information rate with robust, near-capacity communications over noisy power line channels."
So the maximum speed is not going to exceed 150Mbps. Then you have to factor in line noise, the quality of the cabling in the house, the distance between the units and how many people are using the network consecutively. So there are many variables to consider. These concerns also affect wireless and CAT5e connections, the latter to a lesser degree. Charts showing throughput speeds in different situations can be found here.
It is also important to keep in mind that we were testing a specific model wireless adapter, which uses the 802.11g specification. Unfortunately the Billion 7300G does not support the new 802.11n standard which boasts a theoretical maximum of 300mbps. However, it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect that it'd have the same reliability issues. On the upside, the faster throughput may well give EoP a run for its money.
All in all, the TP-Link TL-PA201 is an impressive product.
Value: 7/10
It's EoP, so it's not going to be cheap. Despite this, the TL-PA201 kit is very well priced.
Performance: 8/10
Not quite as fast as the theoretical 200Mbps advertised, but it does allow HD streaming just like it claims.
Ease of use: 9/10
Plug and play. It's that easy. If only the QoS software was Windows 7 compatible.
Aesthetics: 7/10
Nothing fancy, and it does take up two power points due to sheer size, but its understated looks aren't necessarily a bad thing.
Build quality: 9/10
It's plastic, but it's sturdy and does the job.
Author's note: If you can't get a direct CAT5e connection, this is highly recommended.
Additional note [9:18PM AEST]: I have come across a Homeplug AV FAQ PDF which answers many very good questions. Check it out here. According to this document, the maximum throughput speed is 80 - 90Mbps.
