I think the iPad really look the biz, just not sure what biz that is. It is a sad fact that Steve Jobs compared it to both the Kindle and a netbook. Basically deriding the netbook as not a very good notebook with poor battery life, screen res, and weight issues, and the Kindle as being limited and not color. Well, yes, the Kindle does suffer from that, but adds in many days of use between charges, and never purported to be anything other than a book replacement. As for the netbook, it was never seen as a notebook replacement - it is a multitasking, flash enabled, internet and media consumption device. Yes you can use it instead of a REAL PC, but it's never going to replace one - and it is color, and it can be used as an ebook reader, and you can get them with up to 1366x768 res (better than iPad), and the N450 chipped ones run for 10 hrs. I love the way the iPad looks, but in comparing it to two very different offerings, Jobbs has just muddied the waters for his baby. I swapped my netbook for a 13" notebook as it wasn't powerful enough for everything I needed, and it did more than an iPad! A color Kindle... that I'd buy!

After reading around, it seems that the eye strain thing may only affect particular people. Some users don't complain, others do. I think it has something to do with the differing brightness between the ambient and active lighting, the way the back light is generated (bulb or LED), and the frequency of moving your eyes between dark/bright frames on the LCD; or the LCD and a darker ambient environment.

I agree that the device may well be a great consumption device, but I'm still struggling to see how it'd cater for creation.

My aunt wants one, and I can understand why. She's already levelled up on the iPhone, she understands how to buy/use apps, and she loves the fantastically simple interface.

I would be tempted to get one to read on, or watch movies on. I disagree with your points about the screen sucking for reading, I do it off my iPhone already, an iPad would just offer a bigger screen to do it on.

There is already a large ecosystem of apps out for the iPad, so it's useful for a lot of stuff.

My reasons from buying one would mostly come down to it being a cheap Lemur replacement, but that's a very niche need.
